Appears 44 times in the Quran.

  1. They shall by no means harm you but with a slight evil; and if they fight with you they shall turn (their) backs to you, then shall they not be helped.

  2. O you who have been given the Book! believe that which We have revealed, verifying what you have, before We alter faces then turn them on their backs, or curse them as We cursed the violaters of the Sabbath, and the command of Allah shall be executed.

  3. Do they not then meditate on the Quran? And if it were from any other than Allah, they would have found in it many a discrepancy.

  4. O my people! enter the holy land which Allah has prescribed for you and turn not on your backs for then you will turn back losers.

  5. So the roots of the people who were unjust were cut off; and all praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

  6. So We delivered him and those with him by mercy from Us, and We cut off the last of those who rejected Our communications and were not believers.

  7. And when Allah promised you one of the two parties that it shall be yours and you loved that the one not armed should he yours and Allah desired to manifest the truth of what was true by His words and to cut off the root of the unbelievers.

  8. O you who believe! when you meet those who disbelieve marching for war, then turn not your backs to them.

  9. And whoever shall turn his back to them on that day-- unless he turn aside for the sake of fighting or withdraws to a company-- then he, indeed, becomes deserving of Allah's wrath, and his abode is hell; and an evil destination shall it be.

  10. And had you seen when the angels will cause to die those who disbelieve, smiting their faces and their backs, and (saying): Taste the punishment of burning.

  11. Certainly Allah helped you in many battlefields and on the day of Hunain, when your great numbers made you vain, but they availed you nothing and the earth became strait to you notwithstanding its spaciousness, then you turned back retreating.

  12. Surely your Lord is Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in six periods, and He is firm in power, regulating the affair, there is no intercessor except aher His permission; this is Allah, your Lord, therefore serve Him; will you not then mind?

  13. Say: Who gives you sustenance from the heaven and the earth? Or Who controls the hearing and the sight? And Who brings forth the living from the dead, and brings forth the dead from the living? And Who regulates the affairs? Then they will say: Allah. Say then: Will you not then guard (against evil)?

  14. And they both hastened to the door, and she rent his shirt from behind and they met her husband at the door. She said: What is the punishment of him who intends evil to your wife except imprisonment or a painful chastisement?

  15. And if his shirt is rent from behind, she tells a lie and he is one of the truthful.

  16. So when he saw his shirt rent from behind, he said: Surely it is a guile of you women; surely your guile is great:

  17. Allah is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that you see, and He is firm in power and He made the sun and the moon subservient (to you); each one pursues its course to an appointed time; He regulates the affair, making clear the signs that you may be certain of meeting your Lord.

  18. Therefore go forth with your followers in a part of the night and yourself follow their rear, and let not any one of you turn round, and go forth whither you are commanded.

  19. And We revealed to him this decree, that the roots of these shall be cut off in the morning.

  20. And We have placed coverings on their hearts and a heaviness in their ears lest they understand it, and when you mention your Lord alone in the Quran they turn their backs in aversion.

  21. And, by Allah! I will certainly do something against your idols after you go away, turning back.

  22. Is it then that they do not ponder over what is said, or is it that there has come to them that which did not come to their fathers of old?

  23. And cast down your staff. So when he saw it in motion as if it were a serpent, he turned back retreating and did not return: O Musa! fear not; surely the messengers shall not fear in My presence;

  24. Surely you do not make the dead to hear, and you do not make the deaf to hear the call when they go back retreating.

  25. And saying: Cast down you staff. So when he saw it in motion as if it were a serpent, he turned back retreating, and did not return. O Musa! come forward and fear not; surely you are of those who are secure;

  26. For surely you cannot, make the dead to hear and you cannot make the deaf to hear the call, when they turn back and

  27. He regulates the affair from the heaven to the earth; then shall it ascend to Him in a day the measure of which is a thousand years of what you count.

  28. And certainly they had made a covenant with Allah before, that) they would not turn (their) backs; and Allah's covenant shall be inquired of.

  29. So they went away from him, turning back.

  30. (It is) a Book We have revealed to you abounding in good that they may ponder over its verses, and that those endowed with understanding may be mindful.

  31. The day on which you will turn back retreating; there shall be no savior for you from Allah, and whomsoever Allah causes to err, there is no guide for him:

  32. Do they not then reflect on the Quran? Nay, on the hearts there are locks.

  33. Surely (as for) those who return on their backs after that guidance has become manifest to them, the Shaitan has made it a light matter to them; and He gives them respite.

  34. But how will it be when the angels cause them to die smiting their backs.

  35. And if those who disbelieve fight with you, they would certainly turn (their) backs, then they would not find any protector or a helper.

  36. And glorify Him in the night and after the prayers.

  37. And in the night, give Him glory too, and at the setting of the stars.

  38. Soon shall the hosts be routed, and they shall turn (their) backs.

  39. Certainly if these are driven forth, they will not go forth with them, and if they are fought against, they will not help them, and even if they help-them, they will certainly turn (their) backs, then they shall not be helped.

  40. It shall claim him who turned and fled (from truth),

  41. Then he turned back and was big with pride,

  42. And the night when it departs,

  43. Then those who regulate the affair.

  44. Then he went back hastily.
